7 Warning Signs Your Automatic Gearbox Needs Attention

May 29, 2026 | Automatic Gearbox

An automatic gearbox is built to do its job quietly in the background, so it is easy to miss the early signs that something is not quite right. Most drivers only take notice once the problem becomes hard to ignore. The good news is that a gearbox usually gives plenty of warning before it fails, and acting early often means a smaller, cheaper repair rather than a major one.

With more than 35 years of experience in automatic gearbox repairs, our team in Huddersfield has seen how a small fault can grow into an expensive one when it is left alone. Below are seven signs that your automatic gearbox needs a closer look, what each one usually means and what you should do next.

1. Delayed or hesitant gear changes

If your car pauses before it moves away or takes a moment to find the right gear, the transmission may be struggling. A healthy automatic should engage smoothly and without a noticeable delay. A delay when you select drive or reverse is often one of the first signs that the fluid is past its best or that an internal component is beginning to wear. It rarely fixes itself, so it is worth having checked sooner rather than later.

2. Slipping between gears

A gearbox that slips will feel like it is revving without the speed to match, or it may drop in and out of gear on its own. Slipping is often linked to low or worn transmission fluid, but it can also point to worn clutches, bands or a torque converter fault. Whatever the cause, slipping should be checked quickly, because continuing to drive generates heat and can turn a modest repair into a far larger one.

3. Jolting, shuddering or harsh shifts

A clunk, jolt or shudder during a gear change is not normal. It can point to worn internal components, a fault with the clutch packs or an issue with the control system. On dual clutch units such as a DSG gearbox, a shudder when pulling away is a common early warning that the clutches or mechatronic unit needs attention. The sooner you look at it, the more options you usually have.

4. Strange noises

Whining, humming or grinding sounds that change with road speed often come from the transmission. Noises that appear when the car is in gear but settle in neutral are particularly worth investigating. New sounds are your car’s way of telling you something has changed inside the gearbox, and they tend to get louder, not quieter, the longer you ignore them.

5. Warning lights on the dashboard

A gearbox or engine warning light should never be ignored. A warning light is your car telling you a system needs checking, and an illuminated light can also cause your vehicle to fail its MOT test, which checks that your car meets road safety standards. Modern gearboxes store fault codes that our diagnostic equipment can read, which helps us pinpoint the problem rather than guess at it. If a warning light has appeared alongside rough shifting, it is well worth booking a proper diagnosis.

6. Leaking or burnt-smelling fluid

Red or brown fluid under the car can mean a leak, and a burnt smell suggests the fluid is overheating. Clean transmission fluid at the correct level is essential to keep an automatic gearbox running well, because the fluid both lubricates and cools the unit and transfers power through the torque converter. Catching a leak early, and keeping up with regular servicing and reconditioning, is one of the simplest ways to avoid a much bigger bill later on.

7. The car goes into limp mode

If your vehicle suddenly limits itself to one gear and reduced power, it has gone into a protective limp mode. This is the gearbox telling you it needs help straight away. Limp mode is designed to prevent further damage, so the safe response is to limit your driving and have the car checked as soon as you can. We read the stored fault codes to find the real cause before recommending any work.

Catch it early and save money

Many of these faults can be repaired without replacing the whole gearbox, especially when they are caught early. A worn seal, a faulty solenoid or a mechatronic fault can often be put right on its own, while a slipping gearbox that is driven for weeks may need a full rebuild. The pattern is the same across nearly every job we see: the earlier the problem is found, the smaller and cheaper the repair tends to be.

How we find the real cause

Every job starts with a proper diagnosis using the same calibre of equipment you would expect from a main dealer. We read the fault codes, road test where possible and inspect the fluid before we recommend any work, so you only pay for what your car actually needs. We are specialists in ZF auto gearboxes and DSG gearboxes, and where a unit is beyond economical repair we can supply and fit a reconditioned gearbox from our stock of over 400 units, which usually means little or no waiting. All of our work comes with a guarantee of up to two years.

We work on all makes and models

From everyday hatchbacks to performance and prestige cars, we repair and recondition gearboxes for all major manufacturers, including BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and many more. Whatever you drive, the warning signs above apply, and our team can tell you exactly what is going on with your transmission.
