What is a DSG Automatic Gearbox?
Although they feel almost exactly like traditional automatic gearboxes, direct shift gearboxes (frequently referred to as a DSG gearbox) use a pair of clutches, rather than a single unit. They still rely on the familiar lever or paddle behind the steering wheel, just like any automatic transmission. Most DSG automatic gearboxes can allow you to put your car into Sports Mode to improve acceleration or Manual Mode for a standard driving experience.
The main advantage of DSG automatic gearboxes is that they allow you to change gear extremely quickly. This is much faster than either a manual gearbox or a standard automatic gearbox. Thanks to their increased speed and versatility, they are becoming an increasingly popular choice for all kinds of sports models. When you fit a DSG gearbox you will usually benefit from better fuel economy especially in stop start traffic as you are not continually putting your foot on the brake.

DSG Gearbox FAQ’s
What is a DSG gearbox?
A DSG gearbox, (Direct Shift Gearbox) is a type of dual-clutch gearbox. Also known as a dual-clutch transmission, it is an advanced type of automatic transmission that uses two separate clutches for seamless and quick gear changes. It combines the efficiency of a manual gearbox with the convenience of an automatic transmission.
How does a DSG gearbox work?
A DSG gearbox consists of two independent gear sets, each with its own clutch. While one clutch is engaged with a specific gear, the other clutch is ready to engage the next gear. This allows for extremely fast and smooth gear changes, as the next gear is pre-selected and can be engaged almost instantly.
What are the advantages of a DSG gearbox?
DSG gearboxes offer several benefits. They provide faster and smoother gear changes compared to traditional automatic transmissions, resulting in quicker acceleration and improved performance. They also enhance fuel efficiency by optimising gear ratios and reducing power losses. Additionally, DSG gearboxes offer the convenience of automatic operation while still allowing manual control through paddle shifters or a gear lever.
Are DSG gearboxes reliable?
DSG gearboxes have proven to be reliable in many applications. However, like any mechanical component, they require proper maintenance and servicing to ensure both optimum performance and longevity. It’s crucial to follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule and use the specified transmission fluid. Regular servicing can help prevent potential issues and ensure the smooth operation of the gearbox.
How Long Does a DSG Gearbox Last?
In smaller engine cars, DSG clutches are dry and have an estimated lifespan of 60,000 to 70,000 miles. In contrast, larger engine cars feature ‘wet’ DSG gearbox clutches, meaning they operate in an oil-based environment. While this setup extends clutch wear, it also introduces the issue of oil contamination.
Which VW Models Have DSG Transmission?
There are a number of VW models that come with Direct Shift Transmission which is a semi automatic dual clutch gearbox offering faster gear changes and improved fuel efficiency. Typically found in VWs sportier models that include the GTI, GLI and CC along with some R models. However, not all these have DSG, as some may have gained or lost the option depending on the make and year of manufacture. One way of checking whether the car has DSG is to look at the gear selector for DSG or S Tronic branding.
VW models that currently have DSG Transmission include:
- The Golf GTI, GTE, and GTD models.
- The Jetta Hybrid, Jetta GLI, and Passat V6 models have DSG.
- The T-Cross,
- Tiguan,
- T-Roc,
- Touareg,
- CC,
- Eos,
- Beetle R-line models
Which Audi Models have DSG Gearbox Transmission?
There are a number of different Audi models that are equipped with Dual clutch transmission or S Tronic which is the marketing term used by Audi for their Dual Clutch Transmission vehicles.
These include:
The Audi TT series,
- TTS
- TT RS
The S Series
- S3
- S4
- S5
The RS Series
- RS3
- RS5
- RS6
- RS7
The aim of the Audi S Tronic system is to provide drivers with a smoother, more responsive drive while delivering improved fuel efficiency. You can use your vehicle identification label, engine and transmission code to determine whether your audi car has DSG transmission. All this information is contained in your operating manual.
Are Skoda DSG Gearboxes Reliable?
The simple answer is yes, Skoda DSG gearboxes have a reputation for being extremely reliable both in the 6 and 7 gear formats. Failures are very rare however, you should be aware that if they do malfunction they can be expensive to fix. These issues which are usually rare are typically found in older vehicles with higher mileage. Skoda gearboxes do require oil changes and this should be carried out every 40,000 miles.
