How Often Should You Service An Automatic Gearbox?

Plenty of drivers are told that an automatic gearbox is sealed for life and never needs looking at. It is one of the myths we hear most often at our Huddersfield workshop, and believing it can lead to a repair bill that a routine service would have avoided. An automatic works hard every time you drive, so it deserves the same regular care as the rest of your car.

So how often is often enough? The honest answer is that it depends on the vehicle and the way you use it, but there are some sensible guidelines worth knowing. In this guide we explain the intervals we recommend, why the fluid matters so much, the warning signs that a service is overdue and what a proper gearbox service should include.

Is an automatic gearbox really sealed for life?

This is where a lot of the confusion begins. Some manufacturers describe the transmission fluid as a lifetime fill, and on paper that sounds reassuring. In practice, lifetime often means the design life of the gearbox rather than the life of the car, and that design life can be a lot shorter than owners expect. Once you keep a car past that point, or drive it hard, the fluid has usually done far more work than the label suggests.

We see the results of this every week. A gearbox that has never had its fluid changed will often be running on dark, tired oil full of clutch material and debris. Changing it is not a luxury, it is basic maintenance, and it is one of the cheapest ways to protect an expensive part of your car.

A sensible starting point for service intervals

For most traditional automatics, a fluid and filter change somewhere between 40,000 and 60,000 miles is a reasonable target. Some manufacturers quote longer intervals, and a few describe the fluid as a lifetime fill, but in our experience fresh fluid at sensible intervals pays for itself. dual clutch gearboxes such as the DSG usually need attention more often, so always check your handbook or ask us for the right figure for your model.

How your driving affects the interval

Two cars with the same gearbox can need servicing at very different points, simply because they are used differently. The harder the transmission has to work, the hotter the fluid runs, and heat is what wears an automatic out. It is worth bringing the interval forward if any of the following sound like your motoring:

• Towing a caravan, trailer or horsebox, which puts sustained load through the gearbox.
• Regular heavy loads or a full car, for example large families or work vehicles.
• A lot of stop start town driving, where the gearbox is constantly shifting and rarely cools down.
• Frequent short journeys, which never let the fluid reach and hold its ideal temperature.
• Performance or spirited driving, which naturally generates more heat.

If none of these apply and you cover steady motorway miles, you may comfortably reach the upper end of the interval. If several apply, err on the side of caution and have the fluid checked sooner.

Why the fluid matters so much

Transmission fluid does far more than lubricate. It cools the gearbox, carries the drive through the torque converter and keeps the internal parts clean. It also feeds the hydraulics that actually change the gears, so its condition has a direct effect on how the car shifts. Over the miles the fluid breaks down, picks up debris and loses its protective qualities.

Tired, dirty fluid is one of the leading causes of rough shifting and early wear. As it degrades it struggles to build the right pressure, the clutches begin to slip and that slipping creates yet more heat and debris. It becomes a cycle that gets worse the longer it is left, which is exactly why a timely fluid change is about much more than a quick top up.

Signs your gearbox is due a service

You do not have to wait for the mileage to come round. Your car will often tell you when the fluid is past its best. Look out for:

• Rough, jerky or delayed gear changes, or a pause before the car selects drive or reverse.
• Slipping, where the engine revs climb but the car does not pick up speed to match.
• A burnt smell, which suggests the fluid is overheating.
• Fluid that has turned dark brown rather than a healthy red, or a leak under the car.
• A gearbox or engine warning light, or the car dropping into limp mode.

Any of these is worth investigating quickly. Caught early, most are a simple fix. Left alone, they can turn into the kind of internal damage that needs a full rebuild.

What a proper automatic gearbox service involves

A good service is thorough, and it is worth knowing what you are paying for. We drain the old fluid, renew the filter where one is fitted, fit a fresh sump gasket if needed and refill with the exact specification fluid for your vehicle. Using the correct fluid matters enormously, because the wrong oil can cause poor shifting or damage in its own right. We also look for leaks and read any stored fault codes, so a small problem is caught before it grows. Frequently asked questions

Can I check the transmission fluid myself?

On some older cars there is a dipstick, but many modern automatics are sealed and can only be checked properly from underneath at the correct temperature. If you are not sure, it is safest to let us look, as overfilling or underfilling can cause its own problems.

Will a fluid change fix a gearbox that is already slipping?

Sometimes. If the slipping is caused by old fluid caught early, a service can make a real difference. If the clutches are already worn, the fluid change will help but may not cure it, which is why we always diagnose first and give you honest advice.

Is it ever too late to service a high mileage gearbox?
